Another Mother's Story

painting by Joy McGinnis

A friend forwarded this story this morning because it reminded him of Keven and me.  I'm sure many of you can relate to it.  I think the point of the story is clear - this young man's parents did all the right things but their son still managed to become addicted, and once that happens - well, you know what happens.  Its the beginning of a nightmare for the family and the addict, one that usually lasts for many years.

"Behind every drug addict, there’s a mom, and we love these kids...."
Read the rest here.

On a personal note:  Keven will be moving out this weekend and believe it or not, I'm going to miss him.  When he's not using, he's the joy of my life.  He'll be about 25 miles away so I will still be able to see him when I want.

Also, this morning he told me he was having his phone number changed.  I was pleasantly surprised by this.  One positive outcome of him living at home for the last month has been his realization that he has only two true friends (they are both away in college, one is at Berkeley, the other at San Luis Obispo).  All his other friends are addicts or former addicts that still have addict behavior.  This to me means that he is wiping the slate clean and starting over fresh.  Of course he will still have their numbers but plans to delete them (we'll see about that).

Peace, Hope and Love, Barbara

Barbara,

Sorry to tell you this but there are way too many babies born as heroin addicts. Our daughter worked as a manager of the pediatric unit at a major hospital. There are way too many babies in the NECU born addicted to heroin, crack, meth and other stuff. They suffer the same withdrawals and issues as mom does when she goes without.

Ron, you are absolutely correct and therefore I changed the title of my blog. Its heartbreaking to think of the most innocent lives of all - newborns - being affected by drugs.

Oh boy, that reminds me of how many we had D's # changed,....with his agreement,...so as to not have the numbers of dealers etc. the "how many times" term tells you how that worked out,....not. But he wasn't ready, & I'm hoping Keven is. The key to that strategy is to also block those #s from being able to call him,....for I'm sure those "wrong people" still have Keven's #. You could also mention that to him,....obviously up to him if he does block them from being able to call him or not. Even with good intentions, getting a call from a using person can be all it takes for a trigger. Again,...of course, up to him as to how he guards against that. You're doing the right thing w/ him leaving. Much as you love him,...you'll undoubtedly feel more peace this way. At least, I sure do hope so. Thinking of you here.

My son did the number change thing too. He wasn't ready. I hope Keven is! Keeping you in my thoughts.

Oh, I wish my daughter would take the step of cutting off her old friends. She has been locked up in either jail or rehab since August as the state took steps to protect the brain of her unborn child. She is due to deliver on Monday...

Then, will money still be available to help her?

She has all the same old friends. She doesn't have any sober friends. And, I know this will be the hardest step for her. My daughter is slightly developmentally disabled. She didn't have any friends, at all, before she fell in with this group of people. No calls to go to parties, movies, sleepovers... she is more confident and more outgoing when she is using. The life of the party ~
