Are We All Criminals?

I found this article, "I Am A Criminal And So Are You" by Michell Alexander, very interesting.

Here's an excerpt that caught my eye, fortunately Keven's felony will be dropped but Anthony will be a convicted felon for life.  Is that fair?  Should a possession of a controlled substance have the same stigma attached to it as other felonies?  (Check out this list of felony crimes.)

"In this country, we force millions of people -- who are largely black and brown -- into a permanent second-class status, simply because they once committed a crime. Once labeled a felon, you are ushered into a parallel social universe. You can be denied the right to vote, automatically excluded from juries and legally discriminated against in employment, housing, access to education and public benefits -- forms of discrimination that we supposedly left behind.

This kind of stigma, discrimination and social exclusion may befall you for no reason other than you were once caught with drugs."

oh God,...this is my fear,...which I am fighting/dealing with. Our son goes to court on July 27th for felony possession of marijuana w/intent to distribute....which all happened in July 2008,...2 years ago. He was given a delayed decision,....w/a mandate of "good behavior",...and the charge is supposed to be then dismissed. In the meantime....he's been convicted of another possession w/ intent,...although a misdemeanor due to a very small amount(but he had a scale :( )...as well as also convicted of an assault,...which,ironically, is the one thing he actually wasn't guilty of,..other than running his mouth, prompting a 51 yr. old man to beat him up. He is doing so much better now (NOT "distributing"!), as well as not using, going to daily meetings, living in an Oxford House,...the idea of a possible LIFE LONG felony for what he did when he was 16 is very upsetting. : (

There are strange things going on with the justice system here and elsewhere. Better not to do crimes at all. But for those that do, I suppose the consequences can be dire.
