Good Meeting

Tonight was Family Group and Keven brought along his friend "Kelly" who truly is like part of our family.  There was a panel of three women from Al-Anon.  One made no sense at all but the other two seemed to touch everyone there, including my son.  One was the mother of an opiate addicted daughter and her sharing was raw and emotional.  At the end she asked for advice from the young addicts there on communication.

Kelly shared (she has about 2 weeks clean and is using Suboxone, she lives with her parents).   Kelly basically told her not to ask her daughter details about her recovery because it was her daughter's recovery, not hers.  She said to be supportive without nagging or asking a lot of questions and to make sure she was living her own life.  I think everyone agreed, I felt proud of her for speaking up and sharing.

Afterward the woman complimented me on my "great kids".  (They do look like siblings, right down the the glasses, brown hair and height).  I told her I couldn't take credit for Kelly but agreed that she was a great kid (she's 21).

I shared in the meeting too!  I talked about what my first Al-Anon mtg. was like and everyone laughed because they could relate to my naivete way back in the early days of this mess.  All in all, it was a very enjoyable evening which included GENUINE laughter and smiles coming from my son :)   Music to my ears.

It would be wonderful if Kelly and her bf and Keven can all stay on the recovery path together.  They have plans to do normal things - movies, swap meet, hiking, the Renaissance Fair, etc.  Its dangerous for recovering addicts to hang out together, but I'm not going to worry.  I'm just going to watch from a distance and pray.

P.S.  I think I was talked into getting a smartphone by the two K's on the drive home.  I am paying $100 a month for a dumb phone so why not upgrade, right?  Anyone have a phone that they LOVE?  Not sure if I want an iPhone, was thinking more of a Droid....

Peace, Hope and Love, Barbara

Sounds like a nice evening. I'm so glad you are still able to have hope.

We have 3 different android phones and we love them all. I won't bore you with the details, you can ask if you want more info. But I don't know much about the Droid phone.

I am glad that the meeting went well. Our local AlAnon district participates in meetings at hospitals. It sounds like a positive conversation.

Get the iPhone. Nothing but good stuff to say about it and other Apple products.

"I'm gonna watch from a distance and pray" should be an AlAnon quote!! So thankful for your evening. There is nothing better than a visit from your child minus addiction...it is a glimmer of hope.

I'm with Syd. I don't really go for new gadgets but finally broke and got the I phone. It is the most user friendly device ever. And, the apps are amazing. You can almost anything.

Phew . . . I thought you were gonna say Keven had talked you into getting him one for Christmas . . I had visions of it being swapped five minutes later . . . I know you're not that soft really :-) And I'm sorry for being such an old cynic . . . maybe he wouldn't swap it. Anyway thats irrelevant cus its yours! (or will be)
Good that they planning "normal stuff" together.
And good to hear you had a nice evening together. Hugs x

What a nice al anon meeting.

I got a smart phone last year, and it's the coolest thing ever. I have an Android, but I've heard raves on the iphone too.

I'm glad that the meeting went well. It's great that both Kelly and Keven responded so well, hopefully it's a sign that they're planning on being on the right path for the long haul.

Sounds like such a fabulous evening...a long one in the making and so deserving to all.

Upgrading to a smart phone will make your life so much easier and it will solve your GPS problem. My younger Sis has an Android and I've heard a few complaints regarding it. Mom and older Sis have iPhones and cannot go on enough about their love for them. I have a Blackberry (she says with disdain) but use my iPad2 constantly and understand its pretty much like a large iPhone and it is amazing because they just keep coming up with better and better amazing apps and so far the ones I use are Free.

And yes,...Iphone, Iphone, Iphone..it's awesome and you'll LOVE it ! I got it as a skeptical person who thought..."oh geez, I don't need this" etc.,,..and now I'd never want to use another one !

I tried to comment on this last night but the forces that would not allow it for some reason.....so here I am now. I love my iphone btw.

I am so glad you had a good meeting experience. For today it sounds like things are good. Kelly is one wise girl.

It's getting enjoyment out of "normal" things that seems to be the key to a successful life for any of us, not just addicts.

Keep praying, and living. :)

$100 monthly for phone seems outrageous. I have an Android LG Optimus V and love it. I have Virgin Mobile nd pay $25 monthly for $300 minutes (I'm not a talker) and unlimited texting and internet. My husband and daughter each have Boost with unlimited everything for about $50 a month with shrinkage which will take it down to $35 a month in about 18 months. You of course have to buy the phone but they really aren't that expensive and you aren't locked in.
So sad to hear about Keven leaving. Take Kelly's advice. Make sure you're ok and let K handle his own recovery or lack thereof. Love you both.

I love my droid. I have the LG Ally. It's an older phone--about a year and a half old, but I LOVE it.
